This course covers both first language acquisition and second language acquisition. The first half of the semester focuses on the nature of the lexicon, phonological, and syntactic acquisition by children. The second half of the semester is devoted to second language acquisition, in which various theories of L2 acquisition will be discussed. Topics will include similarities and differences between L1 and L2 acquisitions, interferences of L1 toward L2 acquisitions, and the role of universal grammar.
