This course surveys central topics in the analysis of word- and sentence-meaning and explores the knowledge speakers of English must have in common to enable them to communicate. The course also discusses the distinction between semantic and grammatical categories, such as participants and persons, temporality and tense, and modality and mood.

The student will discuss topics in assigned readings, complete e-assignments, and submit a research project.
